Bamboo Artisan Conclave 2019
Dumka 18-19, 2019


Bamboo Artisan Conclave is organised at outdoor stadium at Dumka, the sub-capital of Jharkhand, on 18-19, 2019. Objective is to enhance awareness among the artisans, product diversification and new market opportunities this sector provides to the local population. Event coincides with the World Bamboo Day celebrations, marked globally to promote Bamboo cultivation as a source of economic development. 

Bamboo is a significant source of employment in Santhal Pargana region. This event will provide a platform to bring in avenues for value addition, skill development and market linkages, which in turn will help Jharkhand in realising the potential that this sector offers. About 10,000 artisans, 100 delegates from Bamboo Industry, 20 bamboo experts and 60 exhibitors are participating in the conclave. 

Event marks government’s commitment to support local bamboo industry and provide market linkages and initiatives of value addition. Renowned speakers from Industry, Banking and Research Institutions working in the field of Bamboo products manufacturing and marketing are interacting with artisans on improving the productivity of Bamboo and its products. Event was graced with the presence of Smt. Droupadi Murmu, Hon'ble Governor of Jharkhand. Chief Secretary of Jharkhand, Shri D. K. Tiwari and Shri K. Ravi Kumar, Secretary – Industries. 

Releasing the book titled ‘Bamboo Resource Status and Business Opportunities in Jharkhand’, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, Hon'ble Governor of Jharkhand said that the conclave will give impetus to efforts for social and financial inclusion of villagers, tribal and backward community. This book documents facets of Bamboo economy in Jharkhand and is a reference point for stakeholders of the sector. 

Jharkhand has been working on a strategy of linking traditional employment options of the local artisans and craftsmen with the new age marketing platforms. To ensure that it happens, linkage for marketing platforms, credit support and technical value addition are being envisaged under ‘Mukhyamantri Laghu avam Kutir Udhyam Vikas Board’. ‘Jharkhand State Bamboo Mission’ has also been launched to improve Bamboo production by introducing hybrid varieties. An MoU has also been signed with leading e-Commerce platform, FlipKart recently to market products produced by artisans from the state. Leading companies like IKEA, ESAF Group of Enterprises, Snapdeal, Dalmia and Pipal Tree are also participating in the conclave.

Chief Secretary highlighted that Jharkhand has traditionally been leader in Bamboo cultivation and value addition by tribal and local artisans, which is the main source of their livelihood and more often referred as Tribal Timber. To give a further thrust many transformative steps on policy framework, infrastructure to implement these initiatives and capacity building are being taken to promote bamboo-based industries in the State.

Shri K. Ravi Kumar, Secretary – Industries informed that Government of India has delisted Bamboo from forest produce. Further, import of Agarbatti has been restricted. Both these actions have opened up vast opportunities to promote employment opportunities in Bamboo cultivation, through skill development of artisans, production of Bamboo based products and marketing of the same. This will provide sustainable source of livelihood to people in this region. Now a days, bamboo has huge potential as source of biomass energy for industries and packaging material.

Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Raghubar Das will be addressing the Conclave on Sept 19, 2019 and will be presenting a details of a number of initiatives to support Bamboo economy. In the morning, Hon’ble Chief Minister will flag off Bamboo Product Export Container at Basia on Sept 19, 2019. 

Online inauguration of three CFC (Common Facility Centre) under ‘Integrated Handlooms Integrated Handlooms Development Scheme’ at Telbula, Teliyachak (Dumka) and Barhet (Sahebganj) is planned on Sept 19, 2010. This facility will improve competitiveness of the units, improvement in quality of the products and market linkages. 

Conclave will provide a deep understanding for the bamboo and bamboo- based industries and converge all stakeholders at the same page to infuse technology supported innovation and precisely to attract investment in this sector. Facility is open for general public after 4pm on both the days.
